Overview
TA2/Gr2 is an industrial titanium with a single α phase. The commonly used industrial pure titanium in industry is TA2, because of its moderate corrosion resistance and comprehensive mechanical properties. TA3 can be used when the wear resistance and strength requirements are high. TA1 can be used when better forming performance is required.
Titanium alloy is a new important structural material used in the aerospace industry. Its specific gravity, strength and use temperature are between aluminum and steel, but it has high specific strength and excellent seawater corrosion resistance and ultra-low temperature performance. In 1950, the United States first used it as a non-load-bearing component such as the rear fuselage heat shield, wind guide cover, and tail cover on the F-84 fighter-bomber. Since the 1960s, the use of titanium alloy has moved from the rear fuselage to the middle fuselage, and partially replaced structural steel to manufacture important load-bearing components such as bulkheads, beams, and flap rails. The use of titanium alloy in military aircraft has increased rapidly, reaching 20% to 25% of the aircraft structure weight.
Pure titanium is a silvery-white metal with many excellent properties. The density of titanium is 54g/cm3, which is 43% lighter than steel and slightly heavier than the long-renowned light metal magnesium. However, its mechanical strength is similar to that of steel, twice that of aluminum and five times that of magnesium. Titanium is resistant to high temperatures, with a melting point of 1942K, which is nearly 1000K higher than gold and nearly 500K higher than steel. Titanium wire is made of titanium metal, which is drawn into wire form through a special treatment process to become titanium wire. The commonly used industrial pure titanium in industry is TA2, because of its moderate corrosion resistance and comprehensive mechanical properties. TA3 can be used when higher wear resistance and strength requirements are required. TA1 can be used when better forming performance is required.
Industrial pure titanium is divided into three grades: TA1, TA2 and TA3 according to its impurity content. The interstitial impurity elements of these three types of industrial pure titanium gradually increase, and the mechanical strength and hardness also increase step by step, but the plasticity and toughness decrease accordingly.
